This ghazal by Faani Badayuni is a lover’s last call, summoning the beloved to see his grave. Come, he says, and look at the keepsake of the one who died for you. One day this silence will make you weep tears of blood, and the complaints you never bore to hear have turned into speechlessness; slide back the shroud and see. He asks why she turns her face away while slaying him, and tells her to look this way. In the end his bier is about to be lifted. Jagjit Singh’s voice lends dignity to this mournful ache.

See the dagger’s gleam upon my neck, as you pass.)

Kisi Ka Aish Marg-e-Nagahani Dekhte Jao
(You have tasted the delight of life’s spring and shall taste more;
Look, as you pass, at someone’s pleasure ending in sudden death.)
Wo Utha Shor-e-Matam Aakhri Deedar-e-Mayyat Par
Ab Utha Chahte Hain Naash-e-‘Faani’ Dekhte Jao
(There rose the cry of mourning at the last glimpse of the dead;
Now they would lift the bier of ‘Faani’, look as you pass.)
The refrain “dekhte jao” (“look as you pass”) is a bitter invitation, showing the beloved something new in each couplet: the grave, the silence, youth turning to dust, speechlessness, a guttering flame, the dagger and finally the bier. The tone is not complaint but a quiet, stinging testimony. In the sixth couplet the lover tells even his slayer to strike facing him, not with averted face, because for him a meeting of eyes outweighs the killing. Faani Badayuni (1879-1941) was born Mohammed Shaukat Ali Khan. His law practice did not thrive, and in 1932 he was invited to Hyderabad, where he became the principal of a school. Death and sorrow colour his poetry deeply, and his pen name “Faani” itself means mortal.
