This ghazal by Mir Taqi Mir is the story of a man who has lost himself. The opening couplet says that self-forgetfulness has carried him away, and he has long been waiting for himself. The poet calls weeping through the night his only trade, and wonders what choice he has left after giving away his heart. He compares himself to the Anqa, famous in every city yet nowhere to be found. The sky itself, he says, is merely the smoke of our hearts. Jagjit Singh’s voice deepens this ache.

Bekhudi Le Gayi Kahan Hum Ko
Der Se Intezar Hai Apna

(Where has self-forgetfulness carried us away?
For long we have been waiting for ourselves.)

Rote Phirte Hain Saari-Saari Raat
Ab Yahi Rozgaar Hai Apna

(We wander weeping through the whole night long;
This is now the only trade we own.)

De Ke Dil Hum Jo Ho Gaye Majboor
Is Mein Kya Ikhtiyar Hai Apna

(Having given away our heart, we became helpless;
What choice is left to us in this?)

Kuchh Nahin Hum Misal-e-Anqa Lek
Shehr-Shehr Ishtehar Hai Apna

(We are nothing, like the fabled Anqa bird, and yet
Our fame is advertised in city after city.)

Jis Ko Tum Aasman Kehte Ho
So Dilon Ka Ghubar Hai Apna

(What you call the sky above
Is but the dust and smoke of our own hearts.)

The opening couplet is among Mir’s most quoted lines. It is often read as a man who has lost himself and is now waiting for himself to return. The “Anqa” in the fourth couplet is a fabled bird whose name is known everywhere, though no one has ever seen it. So the poet is mocking himself: “We are nothing, yet our fame is advertised in every city.” Calling the sky “the smoke of our hearts” in the last couplet makes the whole universe look like the vapour of his sorrow. Mir (1723-1810) is credited with six diwans and 13,585 couplets, and even Ghalib acknowledged his mastery.
