This ghazal by Shahid Kabir is a graceful, gently ironic plea against stretching a matter without cause. The poet says that when we were never angry, there is no need to be appeased. The world’s illusion stands because of the beloved, so with her present, what need is there for the world? Her lane, door and street are enough for the homeless. If there is no longing for hearts to meet, shaking hands is pointless, and a flower need not be touched to be enjoyed. Jagjit Singh’s voice lends it softness.
Besabab Baat Badhane Ki Jarurat Kya Hai Lyrics in English with Meaning (Translation)
Be-Sabab Baat Badhane Ki Zaroorat Kya Hai
Hum Khafa Kab The Manane Ki Zaroorat Kya Hai
(Why stretch a matter when there is no cause?
When was I ever angry, that you must appease me?)
Aapke Dam Se To Duniya Ka Bharam Hai Qayam
Aap Jab Hain To Zamane Ki Zaroorat Kya Hai
(It is through you that the world’s illusion holds firm;
With you here, what need have I of the world?)
Tera Koocha Tera Dar Teri Gali Kaafi Hain
Bethikano Ko Thikane Ki Zaroorat Kya Hai
(Your lane, your door, your street are quite enough;
The homeless have no need of a home.)
Dil Se Milne Ki Tamanna Hi Nahin Jab Dil Mein
Haath Se Haath Milane Ki Zaroorat Kya Hai
(When the heart holds no longing to meet a heart,
What need is there to clasp hand in hand?)
Rang Aankhon Ke Liye, Boo Hai Dimaghon Ke Liye
Phool Ko Haath Lagane Ki Zaroorat Kya Hai
(Colour is for the eyes, fragrance for the mind;
What need is there to lay a hand on the flower?)
The refrain “zaroorat kya hai” (“what need is there”) makes one thing after another redundant in each couplet: appeasing, the world, a shelter, a handshake, touching a flower. The third couplet carries a lovely paradox, because the homeless find their shelter in the beloved’s street alone. The last couplet is the most delicate, saying that beauty can be enjoyed through the eyes and the fragrance, without ever touching it.
