This ghazal is a very gentle and dignified call from a parted lover. The poet says his nest once stood amid the spring of the garden, but that golden age has vanished no one knows where. He begs the beloved, for God’s sake, not to come to his grave, or the world will grow suspicious. Should she come, having lost her way, she must neither lay flowers nor shed tears. His grief is not for his own undoing, but that the world will call her faithless. Jagjit Singh’s voice holds this pain with care.

Chaman Ki Baharon Mein Tha Aashiyana
Na Jaane Kahan Kho Gaya Wo Zamana

(My nest once stood amid the spring of the garden;
Who knows where that golden age has vanished.)

Khudara Meri Qabr Pe Tum Na Aana
Tumhen Dekh Kar Shak Karega Zamana

(For God’s sake, do not come to my grave;
Seeing you there, the world will begin to suspect.)

Agar Aa Bhi Jao Kabhi Raah Bhoole
To Na Gul Chadhana Na Aansoo Bahana

(Should you ever come, having lost your way,
Neither lay flowers nor shed tears.)

Tumhen Bhoolne Ki Main Koshish Karoonga
Yah Wada Karo Ke Na Tum Yaad Aana

(I shall try to forget you;
Promise me, in return, that you will not remember me.)

Mujhe Mere Mitne Ka Gham Hai To Ye Hai
Tumhen Bewafa Keh Raha Hai Zamana

(If I grieve over my own undoing, it is only this:
The world has begun to call you faithless.)

The beauty of this ghazal lies in the lover’s selfless concern. He asks nothing for himself: no tears, no flowers, not even remembrance. Every request is meant to protect the beloved from the world’s suspicion and gossip. The last couplet makes this plain, when he says that he grieves more over her being called faithless than over his own ruin. “Khudara” means “for God’s sake”, which deepens the plea of the second couplet.
