गुलज़ार साहब की यह नज़्म ‘मुँह ही मुँह कुछ बुड़बुड़ करता’ समाज के कड़वे सच और एक बूढ़े दरिया की गहरी संजीदगी को दर्शाती है। इस कविता में दरिया महज़ पानी का बहाव नहीं है, बल्कि वह एक गाँव के इतिहास, उसके लोगों के दुखों और उनकी बदनामी का गवाह है। जब माधव नाम का लड़का लच्छी से झूठ बोलकर उसे धोखा देता है, तो दरिया बेबस होकर बुदबुदाता है। वह लच्छी के जन्म से लेकर उसके जीवन के संकटों को जानता है। दरिया को पता है कि जब समाज लच्छी को ठुकरा देगा, तो अंत में उसकी लाश को छुपाने की ज़िम्मेदारी भी उसी की होगी ताकि वह बदनामी से बच सके।

गुलज़ार की कविता बुड्ढा दरिया-१

मुँह ही मुँह कुछ बुड़बुड़ करता, बहता है
ये बुड्ढा दरिया!

कोई पूछे तुझको क्या लेना, क्या लोग किनारों
पर करते हैं,
तू मत सुन, मत कान लगा उनकी बातों पर!
घाट पे लच्छी को गर झूठ कहा है साले माधव ने,
तुझको क्या लेना लच्छी से? जाये,जा के डूब मरे!

यही तो दुःख है दरिया को!
जन्मी थी तो “आँवल नाल” उसी के हाथ में सौंपी
थी झूलन दाई ने,
उसने ही सागर पहुचाये थे वह “लीडे”,
कल जब पेट नजर आयेगा, डूब मरेगी
और वह लाश भी उसको ही गुम करनी होगी!
लाश मिली तो गाँव वाले लच्छी को बदनाम करेंगे!!

Munh Hi Munh Kuch Budbud Karta, Bahta Hai
Ye Buddha Dariya!
(Muttering softly under its breath, it flows endlessly,
This weary, ancient river!)

Koi Pooche Tujhko Kya Lena, Kya Log Kinaron Par Karte Hain,
Tu Mat Sun, Mat Kaan Laga Unki Baaton Par!
Ghaat Pe Lachhi Ko Gar Jhooth Kaha Hai Saale Madhav Ne,
Tujhko Kya Lena Lachhi Se? Jaaye, Ja Ke Doob Mare!
(If someone were to ask, what is it to you what people do upon your banks?
You should not listen, turn a deaf ear to their idle, cruel chatter!
Even if that wretched Madhav spoke treacherous lies to Lachhi down by the wharf,
What stake do you hold in Lachhi’s fate? Let her go and drown herself if she must!)

Yahi To Dukh Hai Dariya Ko!
Janmi Thi To “Aanwal Naal” Usi Ke Haath Mein Saunpi Thi Jhoolan Dai Ne,
Usne Hi Sagar Pahuchaye The Vah “Leede”,
Kal Jab Pet Nazar Aayega, Doob Maregi
Aur Vah Laash Bhi Usko Hi Gum Karni Hogi!
Laash Mili To Gaon Wale Lachhi Ko Badnaam Karenge!!
(But that is precisely the heavy sorrow this river carries!
When she was born, the mid-wife Jhoolan handed over her umbilical cord to its very waters,
It was this river that carried away the stained clothes of her infancy to the vast ocean;
