गुलज़ार साहब की यह कविता प्रकृति और इंसानी गतिविधियों के एक अनूठे और यथार्थवादी पहलू को पेश करती है। इसमें पहाड़ पर लगे मेले और वहाँ उमड़ती लोगों की भीड़ की तुलना एक अमरूद और उस पर लगी चींटियों या दागों से की गई है। कवि कहते हैं कि हरी-भरी ढलानों पर बिखरे लोगों के समूह दूर से ऐसे लगते हैं जैसे किसी पके हुए फल पर काले धब्बे या दाग पड़ गए हों। जब ढलानों पर भीड़ बढ़ती है, तो ऐसा महसूस होता है मानो हरी पहाड़ी को चींटियाँ उतर आई हों और वह कोई सड़ता हुआ अमरूद बन गई हो।

कोई मेला लगा है परबत पर
सब्ज़ाज़ारों पर चढ़ रहे हैं लोग
टोलियाँ कुछ रुकी हुईं ढलानों पर
दाग़ लगते हैं इक पके फल पर
दूर सीवन उधेड़ती-चढ़ती,
एक पगडंडी बढ़ रही है सब्ज़े पर!

चूंटियाँ लग गई हैं इस पहाड़ी को
जैसे अमरूद सड़ रहा है कोई!

Koi Mela Laga Hai Parbat Par
Sabzazaaron Par Chadh Rahe Hain Log
Toliyan Kuch Ruki Huin Dhalanon Par
Daag Lagte Hain Ik Pake Phal Par
Door Seevan Udhedti-Chadhthi,
Ek Pagdandi Badh Rahi Hai Sabze Par!
(A fair seems to be unfolding atop the mountain high,
People ascend across the lush green slopes under the sky.
Groups paused along the steep inclines appear from afar,
Like dark blemishes staining a ripe fruit with a scar.
Unravelling the green seam as it climbs the hill,
A narrow winding trail keeps creeping upward still!)

Choontiyan Lag Gai Hain Is Pahaadi Ko
Jaise Amrood Sad Raha Hai Koi!
(Swarm of ants seem to have covered this mountain tall,
As if it were a guava decaying slowly in its fall!)
