वक्त की आँख पे पट्टी बांध के।
चोर सिपाही खेल रहे थे–
रात और दिन और चाँद और मैं–
जाने कैसे इस गर्दिश में अटका पाँव,
दूर गिरा जा कर मैं जैसे,
रौशनियों के धक्के से
परछाईं जमीं पर गिरती है!
धेय्या छोने से पहले ही–
वक्त ने चोर कहा और आँखे खोल के
मुझको पकड़ लिया

Chor Sipahi Khel Rahe The–
Raat Aur Din Aur Chaand Aur Main
(Blindfolding the eyes of time,
We were playing the game of thief and cop—
The night, the day, the moon, and I)

Jaane Kaise Is Gardish Mein Atka Paanw,
Door Gira Jaa Kar Main Jaise,
Raushaniyon Ke Dhakke Se
Parchhain Jameen Par Girti Hai!
(Don’t know how my foot stumbled in this relentless spin,
And I was thrown far away, just as
Under the powerful push of bright lights
A shadow collapses onto the hard ground!)

Dheyya Chhone Se Pehle Hi–
Waqt Ne Chor Kaha Aur Aankhe Khol Ke
Mujhko Pakad Liya
(Even before I could touch the goal post and win—
Time declared me the thief, unblindfolded its eyes,
And seized me right there in its grasp.)
