गुलज़ार साहब की यह नज़्म ‘उफुक फलांग के उमरा हुजूम लोगों का’ धार्मिक कट्टरता, अंधविश्वास और भीड़ की हिंसक मानसिकता पर एक बेहद तीखा और गहरा प्रहार है। नज़्म में दिखाया गया है कि कैसे अलग-अलग दिशाओं, दीवारों और अज़ान या घंटी की आवाज़ सुनकर लोग अपनी सोच को छोड़कर एक हिंसक भीड़ का हिस्सा बन जाते हैं। उनकी आँखों में गुस्सा है और उनके हाथों में अपने-अपने अक़ीदों (विश्वासों) के पत्थर हैं। कवि ने इस कड़वी हक़ीक़त को बयां किया है कि यह अंधी भीड़ किसी इंसान को नहीं, बल्कि खुद खुदा की ज़ात को ही पत्थर मारने आई है, जो मानवीय संवेदनाओं की मौत को दर्शाता है।

उफुक फलांग के उमरा हुजूम लोगों का
कोई मीनारे से उतरा, कोई मुंडेरों से
किसी ने सीढियां लपकीं, हटाई दीवारें–
कोई अजाँ से उठा है, कोई जरस सुन कर!

गुस्सीली आँखों में फुंकारते हवाले लिये,
गली के मोड़ पे आकर हुए हैं जमा सभी!
हर इक के हाथ में पत्थर हैं कुछ अकीदों के
खुदा कि जात को संगसार करने आये हैं!!

Koi Minare Se Utra, Koi Munderon Se
Kisi Ne Seedhiyan Lapkeen, Hatayeen Deewaren–
Koi Azaan Se Utha Hai, Koi Jaras Sun Kar!
(Leaping over the horizon, a massive surging crowd of people poured in,
Some clambered down from towering minarets, others rushed from the rooftops,
Some lunged down the staircases, while others tore down the barriers of walls—
Some rose upon hearing the sacred call of Azaan, while others answered the chiming of the church bell!)

Gusseeli Aankhon Mein Phunkarte Hawale Liye,
Gali Ke Mode Pe Aakar Hue Hain Jama Sabhi!
Har Ik Ke Haath Mein Patthar Hain Kuch Aqeedon Ke
Khuda Ki Zaat Ko Sangsaar Karne Aaye Hain!!
(Carrying the fierce, hissing justifications within their raging, furious eyes,
They have all gathered blindly at the turning of the narrow street!
In the clutches of every hand rest the heavy stones of rigid beliefs,
They have come together today to stone the very existence of God Almighty!!)
