This ghazal belongs to a lover who fears that the secret of his love will come out. Lest even his silence start to speak, he tells the beloved not to look at him so tenderly, or his longing will become young again. He has begun to relish her cruelty and dreads that she may turn kind. Even speaking her name might grow into a whole tale. In the end he says that silence is the language of love. Jagjit Singh’s voice lends it softness.

Bezubani Zubaan Na Ho Jaye
Raaz-e-Ulfat Ayaan Na Ho Jaye

(Lest my speechlessness turn into speech,
Lest the secret of my love be laid bare.)

Is Qadar Pyaar Se Na Dekh Mujhe
Phir Tamanna Jawaan Na Ho Jaye

(Do not look at me with such tenderness,
Lest my longing grow young once more.)

Lutf Aane Laga Jafaaon Mein
Wo Kahin Meharbaan Na Ho Jaye

(I have begun to relish her cruelties;
Lest she should ever turn kind.)

Zikr Unka Zubaan Par Aaya
Ye Kahin Dastaan Na Ho Jaye

(Her name has come upon my tongue;
Lest this grow into a long tale.)

Khamoshi Hai Zubaan-e-Ishq ‘Hafeez’
Husn Gar Badgumaan Na Ho Jaye

(Silence is the tongue of love, ‘Hafeez’,
Provided beauty does not grow suspicious.)

The refrain “na ho jaye” (“lest it happen”) turns each couplet into a fear, and each time it is the fear of something dear: of the secret coming out, of longing waking up, of the beloved turning kind. The second and third couplets are the most unusual, because the lover is nervous even of a loving glance and has come to relish her cruelty. It is the state of love where waiting becomes sweeter than union. The first couplet also plays on words: “bezubani” (silence) must not become “zubaan” (speech).
