Ashwamedh Yagya Poem by Amrita Pritam in English

Ek Chait Ki Poonam Thi
Ki Doodhiya Shawet Mere Ishq Ka Ghoda
Desh Aur Videsh Mein Vicharne Chala

Sara Sharer Sach Sa Shawet
Aur Shyamkarn Virhi Rang Ke

Ek Swarnpatra Uske Mastak Par
‘Yah Digvijay Ghoda
Koi Sabal Hai To Koi Pakde Aur Jeete’

Aur Jaise Is Yagya Ka Ek Niyam Hai
Vah Jahan Bhi Thehra
Maine Geet Daan Kiye
Aur Kai Jagah Hawan Racha
So Jo Bhi Jeetne Ko Aaya Vah Haara

Aaj Umar Ki Avadhi Chuk Gayi Hai
Yah Sahi Salamat Mere Paas Lauta Hai,
Pa Kaisi Anhoni
Ki Punya Ki Icchha Nahi,
Na Phal Ki Laalsa Baaki
Yah Doodhiya Shwet Mere Ishq Ka Ghoda
Maara Nahi Jata – Maara Nahi Jata
Bas Sahi Salamat Rahe,
Poora Rahe!
Mera Ashwamedh Yagya Adhoora Hai,
Adhoora Rahe!
Amrita Pritam

English Translation of The Poem

There was a full moon of Chaitra Month (Chaitra is the first month of the Hindu Calendar)
that milky white horse of my love
Wandered around the country and abroad…

the whole body is really white
And ears are of different color…

a gold leaf on his head
‘This unbeatable horse –
If there is any strength, then catch it and live.

And as there is a rule of this Yagya
wherever he stayed
I donated songs
and performed havan in many places
So whoever came to win lost.

My age has expired today
It has come back to me safely,
But what a mishap
that no desire for virtue,
no fruit craving left
This milky white horse of my love
not get killed – not get killed
Just be safe
Be complete!
My Ashwamedha Yagya is incomplete,
and be incomplete!
