Mere Roshandan Mein Baitha Ek Kabootar Poem by Gulzar

Mere Roshandan Mein Baitha Ek Kabootar
Jab Apni Maada Se Gutargoon Kehta Hai
Lagta Hai Mere Baare Mein, Usne Koi Baat Kahi.
Shayad Mera Yoon Kamre Mein Aana Aur Mukhal Hona
Unko Nawaajib Lagta Hai.
Unka Ghar Hai Roshandan Mein
Aur Main Ek Padoosi Hoon
Unke Saamne Ek Wasee Aakaash Ka Aangan
Ham Darwaze Bhed Ke, In Darbon Mein Band Ho Jaate Hain
Unke Par Hain, Aur Parwaaz Hi Khaslat Hai
Aathween, Dasween Manzil Ke Chhajjon Par Vo
Bekhauf Tahalte Rehte Hain
Ham Bhaari-Bharkam, Ek Qadam Aage Rakkha
Aur Neeche Gir Ke Faut Hue.

(A lonely pigeon perched upon the high ventilator of my room,
When he whispers his soft cooing melodies to his gentle mate,
It feels as though he is speaking a subtle word or two about me.
Perhaps my sudden entry into the room and my brief intrusion
Strikes them as something entirely uncalled for and improper.
Their cozy little dwelling is nestled safely within the ventilator,
While I am merely a quiet neighbor living down below.
Spread out before their eyes is the boundless courtyard of the endless sky,
While we bolt our heavy doors, locking ourselves up inside these tiny coops.
They possess mighty wings, and a soaring flight is their true nature,
Upon the parapets of the eighth or the tenth stories of these high buildings,
They stroll around carelessly, completely untouched by any trace of fear.
Whereas we, bound by our heavy mass, take but one careless step forward,
And tumbling down into the great depth below, we instantly perish.)

Bole Gutargoon…
Kitna Wazan Lekar Chalte Hain Ye Insaan
Kaun Si Shai Hai Iske Paas Jo Itraata Haai
Ye Bhi Nahi Ki Do Gaz Ki Parwaaz Karein.

(In their gentle cooing, they seem to utter…
What immense, unseen weight do these frail humans carry along!
What grand possession does he own that makes him swagger with such pride?
He doesn’t even have the power to take a brief flight of just two yards!)

Aankhein Band Karta Hoon To Maathe Ke Roshandan Se Aksar
Mujhko Gutargoon Ki Aawazein Aati Hain!!

(Whenever I close my weary eyes, from the internal ventilator of my mind,
I frequently catch the echoing, haunting sounds of that distant cooing!!)
