गुलज़ार साहब की यह कविता निराशा, मुफ़्लिसी और टूटते इंसानी रिश्तों की त्रासदी को दर्शाती है। कविता का नायक जीवन के भारी बोझ, कंगाली और बीमार दादी के भारी अस्तित्व से इतना तंग आ चुका है कि वह सब कुछ खत्म करने की सोचता है। वह चौदहवीं मंज़िल की छत पर बने कबाड़ी घर पहुँचता है, जहाँ कबाड़ की तरह उसके जीवन की अनगिनत टूटी हुई यादें और बेबस रिश्ते बिखरे पड़े हैं। वह आत्महत्या करने का फैसला करता है और छत से छलांग लगा देता है। लेकिन अंत में एक अप्रत्याशित और गहरा मोड़ आता है, जहाँ पता चलता है कि उसने खुद को नहीं, बल्कि अपनी मानसिक हताशा या अपने ही एक हिस्से को छत से फेंका था।

गुलज़ार की कविता वारदात

दो बजने में आठ मिनट थे
जब वह भारी बोरियों जैसी टांगों से बिल्डिंग
की छत पर पहुँचा था
थोड़ी देर को छत के फर्श पर बैठ ग़या था

छत पर एक कबाड़ी घर था,
सूखा सुकड़ा तिल्ले वाला, सूद निचोडू जागीरे,
का जूता वो पहचानता था,
इस बिल्डिंग में जिसका जो सामान मरा, बेकार
हुआ, वो ऊपर ला के फेंक गया!

उसके पास तो कितना कुछ था,–
कितना कुछ जो टूट चुका है, टूट रहा है–
शौहर और वतन की छोड़ी हमशीरा कल पाकिस्तान
से बच्चे लेकर लौट आई है!
सब के सब कुछ खाली बोतलों डिब्बों जैसे लगते हैं,
चिब्बे, पिचके, बिन लेबल के!
सुबह भी देखा तो बूढी दादी सोयी हुई थी,–
मरी नहीं थी!
जब दोपहर को, पानी पी कर, छत पर आया था
वो तब भी ,
मरी नहीं थी, सोयी हुई थी!
जी चाहा उसको भी ला कर छत पे फेंक दे,
जैसे टूटे एक पलंग की पुश्त पड़ी है!

दूर किसी घड़ियाल ने साढ़े चार बजाये,
दो बजने में आठ मिनट थे, जब वो छत पर आया था!
सीढियाँ चढ़ते चढ़ते उसने सोच लिया था,
जब उस पार “ट्रैफिक लाइट” बदलेगी
रुक जायेंगी सारी कारें,
तब वो पानी की टंकी के उपर चढ के, “पैरापेट” पर
उतरेगा, और —
चौदहवीं मंजिल से कूदेगा!
उसके बाद अँधेरे का इक वक़फा होगा!
क्या वो गिरते गिरते आँखें बंद कर लेगा?
या आँखें कुछ और ज्यादा फट जायेंगी?
या बस—— सब कुछ बुझ जायेगा?
गिरते गिरते भी उसने लोगों का इक कोहराम सुना!
और लहू के छीटें, उड़ कर पोपट की दूकान
के ऊपर तक भी जाते देख लिये थे!

रात का एक बजा था जब वह सीढियों से
फिर नीचे उतरा,
और देखा फुटपाथ पे आ कर,
‘चॉक’ से खींचा, लाश का नक्शा वहीँ पड़ा था,
जिसको उसने छत के एक कबाड़ी घर से फेंका था–!!

Do Bajne Mein Aath Minute The
Jab Wah Bhaari Boriyon Jaisi Taangon Se Building
Ki Chhat Par Paahunche Tha
Thodi Der Ko Chhat Ke Farsh Par Baith Gaya Tha
(It was eight minutes to two o’clock,
When he reached the building’s terrace with legs heavy as filled sacks,
He sat down on the cold terrace floor for a brief moment.)

Chhat Par Ek Kabaadi Ghar Tha,
Sookha Sukda Tille Wala, Sood Nichodu Jaageere,
Ka Joota Wo Pehchaanta Tha,
Is Building Mein JisKa Jo Saamaan Mara, Bekaar
Hua, Wo Upar La Ke Phenk Gaya!
(There was a junk shed stored upon the terrace,
He recognized the worn-out, shriveled embroidered shoe belonging to the ruthless moneylender,
Whatever belongings died or turned useless for anyone in this building,
They simply brought it up and dumped it on the roof!)

Uske Paas To Kitna Kuchh Tha,–
Kitna Kuchh Jo Toot Chuka Hai, Toot Raha Hai–
Shauhar Aur Watan Ki Chhodi Hamsheera Kal Pakistan
Se Bachche Lekar Laut Aai Hai!
Sab Ke Sab Kuchh Khaali Botalon Dibbon Jaise Lagte Hain,
Chibbe, Pichke, Bin Label Ke!
Subah Bhi Dekha To Boodhi Dadi Soyi Hui Thi,–
Mari Nahin Thi!
Jab Dopahar Ko, Paani Pee Kar, Chhat Par Aaya Tha
Wo Tab Bhi ,
Mari Nahin Thi, Soyi Hui Thi!
Ji Chaaha Usko Bhi La Kar Chhat Pe Phenk De,
Jaise Toote Ek Palang Ki Pusht Padi Hai!
(He himself carried so very much within him—
So many things that were broken, so many still breaking apart—
His sister, abandoned by both her husband and her homeland, returned from Pakistan yesterday with her children!
All of them resemble empty bottles and discarded tins,
Dented, crumpled, stripped clean of their labels!
Even in the morning when he looked, his ailing old grandmother was fast asleep—
She hadn’t died!
When he drank water and came up to the terrace at noon,
Even then,
She hadn’t died; she was merely sleeping!
A grim urge seized him to carry her up too and throw her onto the roof,
Just like the abandoned backrest of a broken bed laying there!)

Do Bajne Mein Aath Minute The, Jab Wo Chhat Par Aaya Tha!
Seedhiyaan Chadhte Chadhte Usne Soch Liya Tha,

Ruk Jaayengi Saari Caaren,
Tab Wo Paani Ki Tanki Ke Upar Chadh Ke, “Parapet” Par
Utrega, Aur —
Chaudhween Manzil Se Koodega!
Uske Baad Andhere Ka Ik Waqfa Hoga!
Kya Wo Girte Girte Aankhen Band Kar Lega?
Ya Aankhen Kuchh Aur Zaada Phat Jaayengi?
Ya Bas—— Sab Kuchh Boojh Jaayega?
Girte Girte Bhi Usne Logon Ka Ik Kohraam Suna!
Aur Lahoo Ke Chheeten, Ud Kar Popat Ki Dookaan
Ke Upar Tak Bhi Jaate Dekh Liye The!
(A distant tower clock struck half-past four,
It was eight minutes to two when he had first reached the roof!
While climbing the stairs, he had made up his mind,
When the traffic light changes on the opposite side,
And all the rushing cars come to a sudden halt,
Then he would climb atop the water tank, step onto the parapet wall,
And—
Leap down from the fourteenth floor!
After that, there would be a brief spell of darkness!
Would he shut his eyes tight while falling down?
Or would his eyes burst wide open in terror?
Or would everything simply go completely dark?
Even while plunging down, he heard the chaotic shrieks of the crowd below!
And he saw splatters of blood flying high up,
Reaching all the way to the top of Popat’s street shop!)

Raat Ka Ek Baja Tha Jab Wah Seedhiyon Se
Phir Neeche Utra,
Aur Dekha Footpath Pe Aa Kar,
‘Chalk’ Se Kheencha, Laash Ka Naksha Wahin Pada Tha,
Jisko Usne Chhat Ke Ek Kabaadi Ghar Se Pheenka Tha–!!
(It was one in the morning when he walked back down
Using the stairs once again,
And coming onto the pavement, he saw
The chalk outline of the corpse still lying right there,
The very corpse he had thrown down from the rooftop junk shed!!)
