Gulzar Poem Kainaat-4

Raat Mein Jab Bhi Meri Aankh Khule
Nange Paanv Hi Nikal Jata Hoon
Kahkashan Chhoo Ke Nikalti Hai Jo Ik Pagdandi
Apne Pichhwaade Ke “Santuri” Sitare Ki Taraf
Doodhiya Taaron Pe Paanv Rakhta
Chalta Rehta Hoon Yahi Soch Ke Main
Koi Sayyara Agar Jaagta Mil Jaye Kahin
Ik Padosi Ki Tarah Paas Bula Le Shayad
Aur Kahe
Aaj Ki Raat Yahin Reh Jao
Tum Zameen Par Ho Akele
Main Yahan Tanha Hoon

Whenever at night my eyes awake,
Barefoot, I wander through the cosmic lake.
A stardust path trails behind me bright,
Leading to my distant, “Santuri” light.
On milky stars, my footsteps glide,
Hoping a planet stays awake by my side.
A lonely neighbor may call to me near,
Saying, “Stay tonight, have no fear.
On Earth, you roam all alone,
And here, I too am on my own.a

Essence of the Poem

This poem expresses a deep longing for connection and a desire to explore the universe.

Key Themes:

Cosmic Loneliness: The speaker feels a sense of solitude and isolation, even while being surrounded by the vastness of the universe.
The Search for Connection: The speaker’s desire to encounter another celestial body, perhaps a planet with life, reflects a deep-seated longing for companionship.
Nighttime Wanderings: The act of walking barefoot under the starry sky suggests a spiritual journey or a search for meaning.
The Beauty of the Cosmos: The imagery of the milky stars and the galaxy creates a sense of wonder and awe.

Interpretation:

The poem can be interpreted as a metaphor for the human search for meaning and connection. The speaker’s journey across the galaxy is a symbol of their inner journey and their search for a deeper understanding of the universe and their place in it.

The image of the “Santoor” star, which is likely a personal reference, suggests a connection between the speaker’s inner world and the cosmos. The desire to find a companion among the stars reflects a universal longing for connection and belonging.

Overall, this poem is a beautiful and evocative exploration of the human condition. It invites the reader to contemplate their place in the universe and the mysteries of existence.
