Gulzar Poetry Kainaat-1

Gulzar

Bas Chand Karodon Salon Mein
Suraj Ki Aag Bujhegi Jab
Aur Raakh Udegi Suraj Se
Jab Koi Chand Na Dubega
Aur Koi Zameen Na Ubhregi

Tab Thanda Bujha Ik Koyla Sa
Tukda Ye Zameen Ka Ghumega
Bhatka Bhatka
Maddham Khakistri Roshni Mein!

Main Sochta Hoon Us Waqt Agar
Kagaz Pe Likhi Ik Nazm Kahin Udte Udte
Suraj Mein Gire
To Suraj Fir Se Jalne Lage!!

In just a few billion years,
The sun’s fire will dim and fade,
Its ashes will scatter into space,
No moon will set,
No earth will rise again.

Then, like a cold, charred coal,
This fragment of earth will drift,
Wandering, lost,
In a faint, dust-hued glow.

But I wonder—
If, in that time,
A poem written on paper
Floats into the sun,
Would the sun ignite once more?

~ गुलज़ार | Gulzar

Essence of the Poem

Themes of cosmic time scales, the sun and earth’s ultimate fate, and the timeless value of art are all explored in this poem.

Key Themes:

Cosmic Time: Given the lifespan of planets and stars, the poem takes place over a very long period of time.
Entropy: The idea of entropy and the ultimate heat death of the universe are evoked by the sun’s fire going out and the picture of a frigid, floating earth.
The Power of Art: The poem contrasts the vast timescale of cosmic events with the potential power of a single poem to reignite the sun.
Hope and Renewal: The poem concludes on a hopeful note, implying that even in the face of cosmic decay, there is hope for renewal, despite the melancholy imagery of a dying sun and earth.

Interpretation:

One way to read the poem is as a meditation on how pointless human life is in the grand scheme of cosmic time. It also implies that poetry, as art, has the capacity to endure across time and leave a lasting impression on the cosmos. The poem’s conclusion paints a striking picture of resiliency and hope, implying that even in the face of overwhelming despair, there is always hope for rebirth and rejuvenation.

The poem’s use of simple language and imagery makes it accessible to a wide audience. The contrast between the vastness of cosmic time and the smallness of a poem creates a powerful effect. The poem invites the reader to contemplate their place in the universe and the potential impact of their actions, however small they may seem.
