This ghazal by Nida Fazli speaks of life and love in plain words. The poet says the tale of the beloved is told by the moon, the flowers and every tongue. Not everyone knows how to live while adorning the world, and what life is should be heard from the language of love. His voice itself is the veil over his face, and not every veil needs lifting. Ideas like reading writing inscribed on water, and a home’s joy held captive in the moon, set it apart. Jagjit Singh’s voice lends it sweetness.

Chaand Se Phool Se Ya Meri Zubaan Se Suniye
Har Taraf Aapka Qissa Hai Jahan Se Suniye

(Hear it from the moon, from the flowers, or from my own tongue;
Everywhere the tale of you is told, hear it from the world.)

Sabko Aata Nahin Duniya Ko Saja Kar Jeena
Zindagi Kya Hai Muhabbat Ki Zubaan Se Suniye

(Not everyone knows how to live while adorning the world;
What life is, hear it from the language of love.)

Meri Aawaz Hi Parda Hai Mere Chehre Ka
Main Hoon Khamosh Jahan, Mujhko Wahan Se Suniye

(My voice itself is the veil over my face;
Where I fall silent, listen to me from there.)

Kya Zaroori Hai Ke Har Parda Uthaya Jaye
Mere Halaat Bhi Apne Hi Makaan Se Suniye

(Must every veil necessarily be lifted?
Hear of my condition, too, from your own house.)

Kaun Padh Sakta Hai Paani Pe Likhi Tehreeren
Kisne Kya Likkha Hai Ye Aab-e-Rawan Se Suniye

(Who can read the writings inscribed on water?
Who wrote what, hear it from the flowing stream.)

Chaand Mein Kaise Hui Qaid Kisi Ghar Ki Khushi
Ye Kahani Kisi Masjid Ki Azaan Se Suniye

(How did some home’s joy come to be held captive by the moon?
Hear this tale from a mosque’s call to prayer.)

The refrain “suniye” (“listen”) names a fresh place to listen from in each couplet: the moon, flowers, the tongue, the world, the language of love, silence, one’s own house, flowing water and the call to prayer. The poet is saying that truth is heard not from books but from what surrounds us. In the last couplet, the moon paired with a mosque’s call to prayer may hint at the Eid moon, on which a whole household’s joy rests. The bond between Nida Fazli and Jagjit Singh is itself interesting: on the 1978 live album Come Alive in Concert, Jagjit named him from the stage for the first time, and Nida did not know his ghazal had been sung until the record company traced his address to deliver a cheque. Nida died on 8 February 2016, Jagjit Singh’s birthday.
