फ़िराक़ गोरखपुरी की यह ग़ज़ल इंसानी दिल के गहरे दर्द, तन्हाई और ख़ामोशी का एक बेहद ख़ूबसूरत और मर्मस्पर्शी बयान है। शायर कहते हैं कि वक़्त के थपेड़ों और ज़िंदगी के दुखों ने उन्हें इस क़दर बदल दिया है कि वे अब अक्सर ख़ामोश रहते हैं और बहुत कम बोलते हैं। दुनिया के सामने जो आँखें सूखी और शांत दिखाई देती हैं, वे असल में रातों के अंधेरे में तन्हाई में रोती हैं। ग़म की यह कहानी इतनी लंबी और गहरी है कि सुनने वाले थक सकते हैं, इसलिए शायर रात के आख़िरी पहर में सबको आराम करने और ख़ुद भी सो जाने की सलाह देते हैं।

पहले ‘फ़िराक़’ को देखा होता अब तो बहुत कम बोलें हैं

दिन में हम को देखने वालों अपने अपने हैं औक़ात
जाओ न तुम इन ख़ुश्क आँखों पर हम रातों को रो लें हैं

ग़म का फ़साना सुनने वालों आख़िर-ए-शब आराम करो
कल ये कहानी फिर छेड़ेंगे हम भी ज़रा अब सो लें हैं

डाली डाली नौरस पत्ते सहस सहज सब डोलें हैं

उफ़ वो लबों पर मौज-ए-तबस्सुम जैसे करवटें लें कौंदें
हाय वो आलम जुम्बिश-ए-मिश़गाँ जब फ़ित्ने पर तौलें हैं

उन रातों को हरीम-ए-नाज़ का इक आलम होये है नदीम
ख़ल्वत में वो नर्म उंगलियाँ बंद-ए-क़बा जब खोलें हैं
(हरीम-ए-नाज़ = प्रेमिका का घर), (नदीम = सखा, पास बैठने वाला), (ख़ल्वत = एकांत, तन्हाई), (बंद-ए-क़बा = चोली के बटन)

हम लोग अब तो पराये से हैं कुछ तो बताओ हाल-ए-‘फ़िराक़’
