Siddharth Ki Wapsi Poem by Gulzar

Kapil Avastu Door Nahin Hai
Kapil Nagar Ke Baahar Jangal, Kuch Chhidra Chhidra Lagta Hai!
Kya Logon Ne Sookhne Se Pehle Hi Kaat Diye Hain Ped,
Ya Shaakhen Hi Jaldi Utar Jaati Hain Ab In Pedon Ki?

(Kapilavastu is not far now,
The forest outside the city of Kapil feels somewhat sparse and thinned!
Have the people chopped down these trees even before they could wither,
Or do the branches fall off too soon from these trees nowadays?)

Kapil Nagar Se Baahar Jaate Us Kachche Raaste Se Aakhir Kaun Gaya Hai,
Rasta Ab Tak Haanph Raha Hai!
Us Mitti Ki Teh Ke Neeche,
Mere Rath Ke Pahiyon Ki Purzor Kharochen,
Un Raahon Ko Yaad Toh Hoongi

(Who indeed has walked down that unpaved path leading away from Kapil city?
The road itself still seems to be gasping for breath!
Beneath that layer of quiet dust,
The deep, forceful scars left by the wheels of my chariot,–
Surely, those paths must still remember them)

Buddham Sharanam Gachchhami Ka Jaap Musalsal Jaari Hai,
“Aanandan” Aur “Raaghav” Ke Honto Par
Jo Mere Saath Chale Aaye Hain!
Unke Hone Se Man Mein Kuch Saahas Bhi Hai–
‘Saahas’ Aur ‘Dar’ Ek Hi Saans Ke Sur Hain Dono–
Aarohi, Avarohi, Jaise Chalte Hain

(The chant of ‘Buddham Sharanam Gachchhami’ continues relentlessly,
On the lips of ‘Aanandan’ and ‘Raaghav’
Who have walked alongside me!
Their presence brings a quiet courage to my heart–
Yet ‘courage’ and ‘fear’ are merely two notes tuned to the very same breath–
Ascending and descending, like variations in a song)

Aur ‘Ana’ Ye Meri Ki Main Rahbar Hoon–
Tyaagi Bhi Hoon–
Raajpaat Ka Tyaag Kiya Hai,
Patni Aur Santaan Ke Hote…
Kya Ye Bhi Ek ‘Ana’ Hai Meri?
Ya Chehre Par Jada Hua Ye,
Do Aankhon Ka Ek Taraaju
Kya Khoya, Kya Paaya, Taulta Rehta Hai

(And this subtle pride of mine—that I am the ultimate guide, the enlightened pathfinder–
That I am a great renouncer
Who abandoned a thriving kingdom,
Even while possessing a wife and a child…
Is this too merely a form of my spiritual ego?
Or is this balance scale of two eyes,
Embedded firmly upon my face,
Constantly weighing what was lost, against what has been gained?)

Shehar Ki Seema Par Aate Hi, Saans Ke Lay Mein Fark Aaya Hai–
Pinjare Mein Ek Bechaini Ne Par Phadke Hain!
Jaate Waqt Ye Pagdandi Toh,
Baahar Ki Jaanib Uth Uth Kar Dekha Karti Thi!
Laut-te Waqt Ye Paanw Pakad Ke,
Ghar Ki Jaanib Kyun Mudti Hai?

(The moment I reach the city threshold, a shift enters the rhythm of my breath–
An unspoken restlessness flutters its wings inside a cage!
When I was departing years ago, this narrow dirt track
Kept craning forward, looking eagerly toward the outside world!
Why does it now cling to my feet upon returning,
Tending to bend gently back toward home?)

Main Siddharth Tha,
Jab Is Bargad Ke Neeche Chola Badla Tha,
Baarah Saal Mein Kitna Phail Gaya Hai Ghera Is Bargad Ka,
Kadd Bhi Ab Uncha Lagta Hai,–
“Rahul” Ka Kadd Kya Meri Naabhi Tak Hoga?
Mujh Par Hai Toh Kaan Bhi Uske Lambe Hoonge–
Maan Ne Chhidwaye Hoon Shyaad–
Rang Aur Aankhen, Lagta Tha Maan Se Paayi Hain
Raaj Kunwar Hai, Ghoda Daudata Hoga Ab,
‘Yash’ Kya Rath Par Jaane Deti Hoogi Usko?

(I was still Prince Siddharth
When I cast off my royal robes beneath this banyan tree,
How wide the canopy of this banyan has expanded over twelve long years,
Even its height appears taller now,–
I wonder, would ‘Rahul’ reach up to my waist by now?
If he takes after me, his earlobes must be long as well–
Perhaps his mother had them pierced by now–
His complexion and eyes always seemed inherited from his mother,
He is a prince after all, he must be riding horses by now,
Would ‘Yash’ ever allow him to drive a chariot?)

Buddham Sharanam Gachchhami, Aur Buddham Sharanam Gachchhami–
Ye Jaap Musalsal Sunte Sunte,
Ab Lagta Hai Jaise Mantar Nahin, Chetaawani Hai Ye–
“Mukti Raah” Se Baahar Aana,–
Ab Utna Hi Mushkil Hai, Jitna Sansaar Se Baahar Jaana Mushkil Tha!!

(Buddham Sharanam Gachchhami, and Buddham Sharanam Gachchhami–
Listening continuously to this unending chant,
It now feels less like a sacred incantation and more like a warning–
To step back out from this ‘path of salvation’,
Is just as difficult now as it once was to break free from the material world!!)

Kyun Lauta Hoon—–?
Kya Tha Jo Main Chhod Gaya Tha—
Kaun Sa Chhaaj Bikher Gaya Tha,
Aur Batorne Aaya Hoon Main–
Uthte Uthte Shyaad Meri Jholi Se,
Sambandh Bhara Ik Thaal Gira Tha–
Goonj Hui Thi, Lekin Main Hi Wo Aawaaz Phalaang Aaya Tha—

(Why have I returned—–?
What was it that I had left behind—
What scattered remnants did I leave untended,
That I have now returned to gather up–
Perhaps while rising to depart, from my ascetic pouch,
A platter overflowing with human relationships slipped and fell–
It echoed loudly, but it was I who leaped right over that resounding sound—)

Har Sambandh Bandha Hota Hai,
Dono Siron Se,
Ek Sira Toh Khol Gaya Tha,
Doosra Khulwana Baaqi Tha–
Shyaad Us Man Ki Girah Ko Kholne Laut Ke Aaya Hoon Main!

(Every human bond remains tied
At both of its ends,
I had untied one end when I left,
While the other end remained to be released–
Perhaps I have returned today merely to untangle that final knot of the heart!)

Aage Peeche Chalte Mere Chelon Ki Aawaazen Kehti Rehti Hain,
Mahsoor Ho Tum, Tum Kaidi Ho, Us “Gyaan Mantar” Ke,
Jo Tumne Khud Hi Praapt Kiya Hai–
Buddham Sharanam Gachchhami– Aur Buddham Sharanam Gachchhami!!

(The voices of my disciples walking ahead and behind me keep echoing,
You are captive, you are a prisoner of that very ‘mantra of supreme knowledge’,
Which you yourself attained through sacrifice–
Buddham Sharanam Gachchhami– and Buddham Sharanam Gachchhami!!)
