Hindi Kala presents Gulzar Poetry Uss Raat about a night in Hindi & English with the poem’s Meaning (English Translation).
Gulzar Ki Kavita Uss Raat in Roman Transcript
Uss Raat Bahut Sannata Tha!
Uss Raat Bahut Khamoshi Thi!!
Saaya Tha Koi Na Sargoshi,
Aahat Thi Na Jumbish Thi Koi!!
Aankh Der Talak Us Raat Magar
Bas Ek Makaan Ki Doosri Manzil Par
Ek Roshan Khidki Aur Ek Chaand Falak Par
Ek Dooje Ko Tiktiki Baandhe Takte Rahe
Raat, Chaand Aur Main Teeno Hi Banjaare Hain…
Teri Nam Palkon Mein Shaam Kiya Karte Hain,
Kuch Aisi Ehitiyat Se Nikla Hai Chaand Phir
Jaise Andheri Raat Mein Khidki Pe Aao Tum!
Kya Chaand Aur Zameen Mein Bhi Koi Khinchav Hai?
Raat, Chaand Aur Main Milte Hain To Aksar Hum,
Tere Lahze Mein Baat Kiya Karte Hain!!
Sitaare Chaand Ki Kashti Mein Raat Laati Hai,
Sahar Mein Aane Se Pehle Bik Bhi Jaate Hain!
Bahut Hi Accha Hai Vyapaar In Dino Shab Ka,
Bas Ek Paani Ki Awaaz Laplapati Hai,
Ki Ghaat Chhod Ke Maajhi Tamaama Ja Bhi Chuke Hain…
Chalo Na Chaand Ki Kashti Mein Jheel Paar Karein,
Raat, Chaand Aur Main Aksar Thandi Jheelon Ko
Doob Kar Thande Paani Mein Paar Kiya Karte Hain!!
Gulzar Hindi Poetry Uss Raat Meaning (English Translation)
That night was very quiet!
That night was very silent!!
There was no whispering shadow
No sound or movement at all!!
My eyes stayed up late that night but
Just on the second floor of a house
A lit window and a moon in the sky
Staring at each other fixedly
Night, moon, and I, all three are wanderers ……..
In your moist eyelids, we spend evenings
The moon has come out so cautiously
As if you would come to the window on a dark night!
Is there an attraction between the moon and the earth too?
Night, moon, and I often meet
We speak in your tone!!
The stars bring the night in the moon’s boat
And are sold before dawn!
The night business is very good these days
Only the lapping sound of water remains
As if the boatman has left the shore completely ….
Let’s cross the lake in the moon’s boat
Night, moon, and I often cross cold lakes
By diving into the cold water!!

Key Themes:
Isolation and longing: A sense of loneliness and a desire for connection are conveyed by the images of the silent night and the lone figures gazing at one another.
The moon as a symbol: The moon connects the speaker to the natural world and to the person they are yearning for, and it is a symbol of both beauty and loneliness.
The passage of time: A sense of time passing and the transience of human existence is conveyed by the allusions to night, dawn, and the changing of the seasons.

Interpretation:
The speaker and the person they are speaking to appear to have a strong emotional bond, according to the poem. Their emotional state and desire for company are symbolized by the night, the moon, and the water. The poem’s romantic tone is enhanced by the moon image, which frequently represents romance and love.
Existentialism and the pursuit of meaning are other topics that are touched upon in the poem. Awe and wonder are evoked by the speaker’s reflections on the cosmos and their position within it.
All things considered, this poem is a poetic examination of human nature, love, and loss.
